Shorthills Photo Walks with Leigh Daboll

Shorthills is beautiful this time of year. As I indicated at the Club's opening night gala on September 11th (and in response to several member requests) I am going to be running a twice-weekly photo meet-up and walk in the various scenic areas around Shorthills Provincial Park and the Niagara Escarpment during the Fall 2013 photography season. We will be offering a wide range of tours this year, from easy, to moderate, to challenging, tailored to the group's wide range of abilities and fitness. We will be shooting beautiful fall colour scenics, waterfalls, and those magnificent deer herds (the biggest and best bucks I've seen in years). One thing is certain, I will ensure we will show you many interesting spots and subjects that you would never otherwise find on your own!

Why not come and join in on the fun!  Tentatively, rain-or-shine hikes will be held on each Tuesday evening commencing at not later than 6:00pm sharp (until Oct 29th) as long as the light is good and it is not pouring rain, and each Saturday morning (until Nov 29th) commencing at 9:00 am sharp.  Don't let cloudy or stormy weather be a deterrent.  Those are often the best days to shoot fall colours and waterfalls. In case of really inclement weather on Saturdays, the hikes may be postponed until the next day (ie: the Sunday) at noon.

Here is my tentative calendar of events (be sure to check back in the Blog as dates draw near, since weather conditions and last minute changes are inevitable:

As always (especially for the moderate and strenuous hikes) good water-resistant hiking boots are a must.  It is always advisable to carry a small backpack with a drink, a snack, spare socks/gloves, and a few first aid items.

I hope to see everyone out to at least a few sessions!

Ellen Annon

The Science Museum Camera Club, with support from the Buffalo Museum of Science, is proud to bring Ellen Anon to Buffalo. She will be presenting the Hayes Lecture on Friday September 20th from 6:30 pm to 9 pm in the Museum auditorium. As part of the Museum's mission bring science to the general public, this annual lecture is focused on presenting a topic of general interest with science as a component. Given the expansion of photography into everyone's hand via digital devices and photo sharing via electronic media, Ellen has been invited to explore the topics of recent book "See It, Photographic Composition Using Visual Intensity". This lecture will be on Friday September 20th from 6:30pm to 9pm in the Museum auditorium. It is free to all but a reservation is required as space is limited. So don't wait to register. Once the Museum has the number they can accommodate, registration will close. Note that the registration phone number for the lecture (716-896-5200 x 380) is an answering machine and you will not get a call back.

On Saturday September 21, Ellen will hold an all day seminar at the Museum. The seminar is intended to be interactive with participants immediately applying concepts presented. This approach will be combination of discussion of topics from her book followed by practice using the ideas presented with your camera and then group review of the photographs taken. The intent is to repeat this several times over the day so that what is presented can get used and reinforced. The seminar is a separate registration from the Friday lecture and has a $50 fee. Snacks at breaks and lunch are included. Space for the seminar is very limited. In a week or so, the Museum will promote the seminar to its patrons and other institutions in Buffalo. Ellen will have a few copies of her book available at the seminar, but it would be best to purchase ahead of time and read it.

Silo City Buffalo - Aug. 17

CITY of NIGHT is an annual, multi-disciplinary event, this year held on August 17th. Key themes include art, history, culture and sustainability. The "Silo City" complex of grain elevators plays host on the Buffalo River, which sets the historical tone and informs the art installations, musical performances, fine art fair, and site tours. City of Night represents Buffalo's incredibly diverse cultural scene with a wide variety of music, dance, sound installation, fashion, and a community art project for all to engage in. We strive to become an ever more eco-conscious event, with local environmental non-profits represented, we encourage recycling and composting, and solar-powered energy! Food truck delights, beverages and CITY of NIGHT-themed merchandise will be available for purchase. The event is free to attend and open to people of all ages and backgrounds. Proceeds benefit the coordinating organization, the Emerging Leaders in the Arts Buffalo (ELAB), a chapter of Americans for the Arts.
